The scandal of hatred

For a very long time
Longer than history books record
Black people have gathered to pray

Churches both visible and invisible
Dirt floors and no pianos
We were not taught to read
Not always given much hope

The bible was shared
Hope escaped and was planted
Songs were born and freedom
The Word became a welcome

No restrictions on who could  come
Lord listen to your children prayin
Love without locked doors
Bible study at round tables

Racism robs innocence
Hatred armed and unchecked
Martyrs who welcomed a stranger
And now Jesus weeps
And we ask

What shall we do?

With the scandal of hatred
